Centennial Campus Energy Outage Planned For June 2

Many buildings on NC State’s Centennial Campus will be without power during the day on Sunday, June 2, due to electric system upgrades.

The electricity, steam and chilled water outage will allow for safe installation of new connections at the Centennial Campus substation, which distributes electricity from Duke Energy Progress to many buildings on Centennial Campus.

The outage is necessary for Duke Energy Progress workers to safely add a campus connection to the high-voltage power supply. This effort is part of a major energy grid enhancement project on Centennial Campus that will improve the reliability, efficiency and capacity of the campus energy grid.

Buildings impacted by the outage will be without electricity for approximately 8 hours and without steam and chilled water for approximately 24 hours. The outage will also limit internet access on Centennial Campus. The Facilities Division expects all service to be restored by 5:30 p.m. on June 2.

A list of Centennial Campus buildings, including how each is impacted by the outage, can be found at go.ncsu.edu/centennialenergy.

Should weather or other circumstances prevent work from being performed on June 2, the backup date for the outage is June 8 or 9. These dates were selected after communication with key building occupants and Duke Energy.

Town Hall meetings are being held to gather information about the impact of the outage. The meetings are on Wednesday, March 13, 9 – 10 a.m. (Hunt Library – Duke Energy Hall B) and Thursday, March 14, 2 – 3 p.m. (Hunt Library – Duke Energy Hall C). Questions or concerns can also be directed to your building’s Facilities Coordinators, who are in communication with Facilities Division employees.

A final outage notification with more details will be distributed as the outage date approaches.
