Bowen Residence Hall

Building Address: 2821 Thurman Drive (show on map)

Building Abbreviation: BOW

Building Number: 095

Precinct: Central

Located on central campus, Bowen Residence Hall is one of the tri-towers that includes Metcalf and Carroll housing facilities. The building honors Arthur Finn Bowen (1872-1942), who served the college for 43 years, though he had no college background.

Bowen was promoted from clerk and secretary to the president, to registrar, and finally to treasurer. The practice of instituting student loan funds, which he devised, is now common at colleges and universities. Bowen was especially interested in enhancing NC State’s boarding program and facilities, as demonstrated by his establishment of cafeteria services for students. His other interests included athletics, and he arranged the building of NC State’s first stadium.
