Formerly a cafeteria, Harris Hall is now a main source of general information for NC State students. The building is named after Louis Hines Harris (1878-1944) who once prepared breakfast for the entire campus by himself during a snowstorm. “Doc” Harris was hired following World War I as chief steward and food purchasing agent for the college, working on a limited budget of $16 a month per student for board. He helped many students with expenses by hiring them for the food service operation or by lending money personally. Harris inherited a military background from Buies Creek Academy in Massachusetts and passed it on to the NC State dining hall for many years through a “mess hall” style of order.
