Kilgore who served a number of administrative positions, including dean of the School of Agriculture, director of the Agricultural Experiment Station and first director of the Agricultural Extension Service. He started his career at NC State after moving from Mississippi where he studied chemistry at Mississippi State University and Johns Hopkins University.
