North Residence Hall was originally the Lemon Tree Inn, a privately-owned hotel built in 1974. It then became the John Yancey Hotel but, when enrollment increased at NC State in the 1980s, the university purchased the hotel to serve as a residence hall. John Yancey donated all of the furniture and North Hall became the first residence hall on campus to have air conditioning. The building was the first time the university independently purchased off-campus property for student housing.
