University Housekeeping is now known as Environmental Services.
The departmental name change reflects industry shifts over the past couple of decades, acknowledging a more holistic approach to cleaning for health.
“Our dedicated employees provide a clean, healthy and safe environment for students, staff, faculty and visitors,” said Ada Baldwin, director of Environmental Services. “This name change better embodies the important role our department plays in promoting safety and well-being within the campus community.”
The departmental name change also acknowledges the rising priority of environmental sustainability and employee wellbeing in the cleaning industry. In 2019, NC State became the first university in North Carolina and the sixth in the nation to achieve Green Seal certification for cleaning services. This comprehensive certification verifies sustainable cleaning techniques, products and robust employee training.
“We have a clearer focus on indoor air quality, use of less toxic chemicals and integrated pest management,” Baldwin said. “Our Green Seal certification also demonstrates how we prioritize ergonomic and workplace safety for Environmental Services employees.”
Alongside the name change is a new career progression program to help grow competencies for employees seeking career advancement within the department.
“By investing in the development of our employees, we are providing a pathway for employee growth that will strengthen our team and the level of customer service we provide to the university community,” Baldwin said.
